Poppies and redshank can lie dormant in the ground for a long time awaiting the opportunity that a ploughed field gives. Famously the churned-up battlefields of Flanders in the summer following the withdrawal of combatants during WW1 resulted in a carpet of red poppies. Redshank leaves have dark splotches that supposedly are the result of Christ’s blood dripping on a redshank ancestor that grew under the cross on Calvary.
